90 × 140 cm
Giclée print on Hahnemühle Edition Etching Rag 310gsm
“There is no such thing as a banal object. The eye reveals its strangeness.” — René Magritte
The Story
A fleeting reflection on Middle Harbour transformed an ordinary boatshed into something uncanny — breathing walls, a rippling apex, and a pale blue eye staring back. Captured in a single instant, Surreal Estate is both playful and profound: a surreal vision born not of the imagination but of the water itself.
Part of the Paintings on Water Collection
The Paintings on Water series explores the natural world as a source of abstraction in art. I propose that abstract painting is not merely an act of unconscious imagination by an artist but rather the result of subconscious observations grounded in reality. These works are a visual expression of how the mind perceives and interprets the world. Using a modern tool—the digital camera—I have captured the unconscious abstractions found in nature. These images invite viewers to engage their own perceptions, contemplating what these organic forms and patterns represent.
