Across the Great Divide inspires a new poem by renowned Australian poet Christopher Barnett

Across the Great Divide

souvenirs
speak to shadow

vein
to vein

bleed
over bay

abyss
abased

silhouettes slit
head to toe

in stained sands

sandman's shelter
to keep winter

winds out

waling
with wraiths

dissonant alphabets
lurch from larynx

stone's
place in mouth

so it bleeds
soon

we wound

yes we
wound

tell by tear
sepsis
shines
in dark
sun

wash
walls with shit
you stole
from mouths

of other omens

salute salvation
brothers
sisters of
murderer of moon

you meant
to go

over divide

bite
through

bone before

fatigue fails
still

as night
night

still as death

silent
as birds
breaking

into heaven
