Stone on Surface
90 × 120 cm
Edition 2 of 10
“What you see on the surface is never the same again once you begin to plumb the depths". Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, visual artist, Coastal Salish Tribe, Pacific NorthWest, Americas.
The Story
Contemporary Australian artists often offer expressions that draw on diverse indigenous Australian cultural influences. In the case of Indigenous art from the Cammeraygal people, whose lands encompass the areas where I kayak and create my work, these expressions sometimes appear strongly influenced by the Australian Central Desert art—a distinctly different cultural domain and region. The Cammeraygal's traditional lands, primarily located on Sydney's lower North Shore and Middle Harbour, inspire my work. With *Stone on Water*, my aim is to create a timeless and contemporary artwork from a photograph captured specifically on Cammeraygal land. My intention is to have the viewer forge a connection with the spirit and culture of the original inhabitants of my area, the Cammeraygal people, through this work..

Paintings on Water Collection
The Paintings on Water series explores the natural world as a source of abstraction in art. I propose that abstract painting is not merely an act of unconscious imagination by an artist but rather the result of subconscious observations grounded in reality. These works are a visual expression of how the mind perceives and interprets the world. Using a modern tool—the digital camera—I have captured the unconscious abstractions found in nature. These images invite viewers to engage their own perceptions, contemplating what these organic forms and patterns represent.
