“Brightness isn’t naïve—sometimes it’s what we reach for after the unthinkable.”

The Story

Inspired by Tim Storrier’s use of burning lines and boat lacquer to picture fire, I noticed a strange parallel in my own practice: lacquer on a yacht hull, caught in fierce sun and fractured by water, becomes a landscape—an outback horizon formed from reflection.

What I didn’t expect was the timing. This work has surfaced for me at moments of extreme collective shock—during the NSW bushfires, and again amid recent tragedy in Sydney. It feels less like an image I control, and more like one that arrives. A reminder that brightness isn’t naïve. Sometimes it’s a choice we make, together, after the unthinkable.
